Join the Beijing Treaty..."International protection of the rights of Korean Wave stars such as BTS"
In the future, Korean Wave stars such as BTS will be able to protect their copyrights internationally.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 22nd that it will join the Beijing Treaty on Audience and Audience Disappointment to protect the rights of actors and performers.
The Beijing Treaty, which is overseen by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), grants audiovisual performers the right to display their names and maintain the same identity for at least 50 years. It also grants exclusive rights to duplicate, distribute and transmit fixed audiovisual acts such as music videos.
Until now, the rights of audiovisual performers, including K-pop singers, drama actors and gagmen, have not been fully guaranteed in many countries. Although Korea joined the "World Intellectual Property Organization's Reality and Record Treaty (WPPT)" in 2008, the treaty only protected hearing performances such as singers and performers.
The Beijing treaty, which is scheduled to take effect on the 28th, currently has 31 countries, including China, Chile, and Indonesia, which have a boom in the Korean Wave. Korea submitted its membership to the World Intellectual Property Organization on the same day, with three others.
From July 22, a month later, the treaty takes effect.
"As our country became a member of the Beijing Treaty, we will be able to properly protect the rights of our actors, idol groups and gagmen in major Korean Wave countries that have already joined the treaty, including China and Indonesia," said Kim Jae-hyun, director of the copyright bureau at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. "After the announcement of the treaty, we will continue to closely check and cooperate with the implementation of the treaty obligations among member countries."
